How Often Should You Service Your Boiler?

Published: 15 January 2025

Most boiler manufacturers recommend having your boiler serviced once a year โ€” and for good reason. A regular annual service isn't just a nice-to-have; it's one of the most important things you can do to keep your heating system running safely, efficiently and reliably.

Why Annual Servicing Matters

Over time, boilers accumulate dust, debris and carbon deposits that can affect performance and, more seriously, safety. A trained engineer will spot early warning signs of wear, potential gas leaks or combustion issues long before they become a costly breakdown โ€” or a safety risk.

Many boiler manufacturers also require annual servicing as a condition of keeping your warranty valid. If something goes wrong and you haven't had the boiler serviced, you could find yourself footing the repair bill even if the boiler is relatively new.

Standard vs Strip Down Service

At M. A. Parkes, we offer two levels of boiler service:

  • Standard Service (ยฃ70) โ€” Recommended for boilers under 5 years old. We carry out all necessary safety checks, a combustion analysis, clean the condensate trap, check the central heating filter and inspect the expansion vessel.
  • Strip Down Service (ยฃ110) โ€” Recommended for boilers over 5 years old, or any boiler we haven't previously attended. In addition to the standard checks, we remove and clean the burners, main heat exchanger and injectors, and inspect the electrodes.

For older boilers, the strip down service is well worth the extra investment. Cleaning the heat exchanger and burners can noticeably improve efficiency, which means lower gas bills โ€” and it gives us a much better picture of the boiler's overall condition.

What Happens If You Don't Service Your Boiler?

Skipping services doesn't mean your boiler will immediately stop working โ€” but over several years without attention, you're much more likely to experience breakdowns at inconvenient times (usually when it's coldest), reduced efficiency leading to higher bills, and a shortened overall lifespan for the boiler.

There's also a safety angle. A poorly maintained boiler can produce carbon monoxide โ€” an odourless, colourless gas that's extremely dangerous. Regular servicing picks up on any combustion issues before they become a hazard.

When's the Best Time to Book?

The best time to service your boiler is during summer or early autumn, before the heating season starts. This means any issues can be sorted before you rely on the boiler daily, and we tend to be able to offer more flexible appointments outside the busy winter period.

If you're not sure when your boiler was last serviced, it's worth getting it done regardless. Give us a call and we'll advise on the right type of service for your boiler's age and history.
